The South Asian Women’s Theatre Festival, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is currently being held in Delhi until March 15. However, a portion of this cultural extravaganza will unfold at the NCPA from today until the 16th.

Of the nine countries participating, theatre groups from three have already come down to Mumbai to perform, sharing the stage with two local theatre groups.

The mini-festival will kick off with Colombo Colombo, written and directed by Indika Ferdinando from Sri Lanka.

On Saturday, Mumbai-based Shivani Tibrewala will be presenting two plays. Retellings, an imaginative rendering of stories translated from Malayalam by Vasanthi Sankaranarayan, which reunites mythological adversaries Sita and Surpanaka as sisters.

This will be followed by a contemporary piece Avoid the Void, a comic monologue about a modern urban woman lamenting her broken relationship.

Among the foreign participants is 20-year-old Thoiba Saeedh from Maldives, director of Dhonhiyala-Alifulhu. Combining Maldivian folklore and elements of fanditha (sorcery) with modern theatre, the play traces the journey of Alifulhu as he finds himself caught between two passionate women, one who appeals to his lust, the other to his heart. “The response in Delhi was really nice and I am looking forward to staging the play in Mumbai,” says an excited Saeedh.”

“South Asian women have a unique voice and identity, and the nature of their struggle will certainly be different from that in the West. While we share areas of commonality, there are areas of difference as well. I’m very interested in seeing what will be on offer in the coming days,” says Shivani.

All plays will be staged at the Tata Theatre, NCPA, at 7pm. For details, call 22813572/ 22813302
