It was just a matter of time before Ashni Biyani, daughter of business tycoon Kishore Biyani, began showing her entrepreneurial genes. She recently launched her label, with bags for women.

The 25-year-old, a textile design graduate from the Stanford and Parson’s School of Design, believes that informal training is the best way to learn.

Talking about her foray into the fashion and lifestyle segment, she says, “Like any other girl/woman I too love bags; and it was an obvious decision to make a start with it. I wanted to give my target audience of 25+ something that is stylish and yet has an Indianess to it.”

She’s of the belief that instead of imitating the West blindly, one should seek inspiration from the unexplored beauty of India, “There’s so much to be inspired from our own country; it can easily outshine the Chinese-made crass stuff being sought after by our women here.”

Ashni is also learning to deftly manage her role as a housemaker with that of a professional, where she has to interact with anthropologists, mythologists and sociologists to make key themes a reality. “It helps me understand the market better, the needs of the consumer, what are their complaints and what we need to work on.”

Working on her line of watches and belts, Ashni wants to tap the lifestyle segment. Her future plans include tapping the clothing and accessories segment.
