Dresses are back and how — from short hemlines to floor-length ones, designers and retail outlets are bringing out one collection after another. But there’s a way to go about picking the right ones as designers give DNA the dress guidelines…

They come in all shorts of shapes, sizes, colours, lengths and fabrics - with the party season creeping back into our lives, be assured that most women out there will be hunting for that perfect dress to wear out — be it for soirees or brunches.

But there is a perfect dress for everyone and wearing the right dress is as important as wearing it the right way. The best judge is your body type. According to designer Ritu Pande, “One’s flaws need to be camouflaged, either through the length or the style. With designers catering to the Indian woman exclusively, finding that flattering dress is simple,” as Michelle Salins adds in, “There are two ways of choosing the right dress; consider your skin colour and your body type (skinny, toned and broad).”

What’s trending
“Long dresses have become very appealing this season, with many designers showcasing lengths far below the knee in their collections,” says Ritu.

With brands marketing the season more as the holiday rather than the Christmas season, Michelle says colours like deep purple, red, bottle green, wine, classic black and navy blue will dominate the season.

“Having said that,” she adds, “In India, we can afford to be a little bold as our winters aren’t as cold or harsh. Colours like teal blue, Victorian pink and fuchsia, being festive add to the spirit.” Lighter shades will suit most people this season as our winters are not standard, giving most complexions pink undertones.

Colours galore
Darker skin tones can go for ogre green, plums, wine reds and navy blues. These suit both the toned and the broad shouldered, busty women. Fair women on the heavier side should try teal blue and bottle greens. “It may not be very appealing to look at but once you wear it on, it looks splendid,” says Michelle. However, if you are combining reds and greens in your outfit, “make sure to do it right. Looking like a Christmas tree looks awful,” warns Michelle.

Get branded
“As far as the designer ones go, Wendell Rodricks’ collections work very well,” says Ritu, adding, “Gauri and Nainika’s fitted structures too are a one of a kind I today’s markets.”

Among the retail brands, Mango, Van Heusen, Espirit and Avirate have some splendid collections this season.
