US first lady Michelle Obama may just wear an Indian designer’s outfit during the Asia Tour which kicked off with India. The dynamic and elegant first lady who’s as much a toast in fashiondom as her husband, had recently ordered outfits with Indian flowery motifs and other embroidery from famous New York-based designer Naeem Khan,  whose brother (and designer) Azeem handled production of the same back here.

Reveals Mumbai-based Azeem, “Yes, Michelle recently chose two of our dresses and it has made us feel so proud. It all came through my older brother Naeem, who has a design house in New York. He sent her three dresses and she chose two of them. The outfits have a European look as Michelle moves in high-ranking international circles and are thus designed to match that. The dresses also go very well with her skin tone and have a few Indian floral designs. We are hoping she’ll wear them on her Asia Tour,” he adds.

And it’s not the first time Michelle has taken a liking to Naeem’s couture, having chosen to wear a dress created by him at the first state dinner of the Obama White House in 2009, to which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur were invited. Michelle had also worn silver Indian-style sparking bangles to accessorise her look back then and wowed the crowd.

“What happened is, Michelle Obama had seen a few of Naeem’s dresses and was fascinated by the embroidery —very European with floral Parisian motifs. The dress she selected to wear was a sleeveless beige gown, with sequins and silver embroidery that perfectly matched her tone. When she saw it, she said, ‘It’s a masterpiece!’,” says Azeem, adding, “Michelle carried off the long gown very well as she’s a very graceful lady and reminds me of (late) Princess Diana. I guess it’s an amazing feeling to design for the first lady,” he adds.

Word has it that in the past Michelle has also worn a beautiful necklace designed by Ranjana, Naeem’s wife. Affirms Azeem: “That is true, Ranjana is a jewellery designer to the most well-known celebrities abroad.”
