Do you know what Christmas in Germany feels like? It’s certainly one of the best attractions during this time in the world. To give a feel of it to Indian kids, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce recently organised a two-day festival supported by DNA Ya! called Mumbai Christmas fest 2009.

Deepika Unni, head of special projects at the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, explains, “Germany in India is largely perceived as a country which only produces hi-tech luxury cars. Through this festival we are highlighting the fact that it is actually much more than just cars. Oktoberfest, the beer festival, and Christmas celebrations in Germany are the life of the season. So we have tried to create a Christmas market here in India that is typical of Germany.”

At the festival that took place at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on December 5 and 6, wooden stalls were set up displaying all kinds of products ranging from clothes for ladies and kids, jewellery, home decor, gift articles, chocolates, balloons and barbeque equipment. A huge Christmas tree was put up decorated with stars and candies where children could pose with Santa Claus and get pictures clicked.

The puppet show, which featured Santa and three pigs, saw a full-house of children roaring with laughter. The fire juggling act and Housie had good attendance as well. Kids could also play basketball, assemble puzzles or get a caricature done at the kid’s corner created especially for them. DNA Ya! complimented children with other fun activities such as making paper bags, vegetable painting and decorating Christmas cupcakes and cookies.

While a German band Die Sulmataler played a mix of traditional German and rock ‘n’ roll music, beer guzzlers savoured rich liquid gold (German beer) available in wheat, dark, white, lime, orange and cola flavours. The Sausage Hut and the Food Court offered famous German sausages and a whole range of German culinary specialties which thrilled the taste buds.
