You know that you are so not into him/her; your relationship is officially over; and yet you refuse to let go off your ex. Well, weird, right? And before you begin to interpret it as a sign of you not being over your ex yet, hang on. It is not what it appears to be.
Psychologists suggest that people often adhere to their exes for only as long as they do not move on to someone better.
It has become quite a fad to stay friends with your exes, but clearly the equations don’t remain the same anymore. You might not be enamored of him/her, but you still choose to turn to your ex for a shoulder to lean on. Admits Tejas Brar, a college student, “I broke up with my girlfriend some three months back but we’d still hang out and spend exclusive time with each other… technically we weren’t dating but we’d still act possessive of each other! It was a weird and messy one month. But I couldn’t help it, till the time I found my present girlfriend.” He says that in retrospect it feels quite “odd and unreasonable.”
Psychologist and relationship therapist Seema Hingorrany provides an insight into this apparent quagmire. “I have seen girls and boys sticking on to their exes for only as long as they don’t find a new partner for themselves. It’s a rather selfish thing that people resort to,” she explains.
Television actress Sukriti Khandpal says, “I guess people tend to keep in touch with their ex because most of the time the couples are confused at the time of their break up…like they’re not sure whether they want to do it or not.” Sukriti agrees that break-ups never come easy. “There is an emotional bonding that you have shared for years. So it’s not easy for one to let go off this emotional support,” she adds.
