Art can blur the lines between reality and illusion. And when dance, painting, light and sound effects come together and become one, it could be a unique therapeutic experience. The Bonjour festival’s Mayakam Oxymore show happening today with Indian and French artistes proves just that.

Chennai-based bharatnatyam dancer and choreographer Sangeeta Isvaran, Paris-based computer musician Cyrille
Brissot and grafitti artist and painter Marko will speak of
gender issues through a unique way. While Sangeeta will do a bharatnatyam, west African and Combodian styles, Marko will paint and Cyrille will create sound and visual effects live on stage.

The combination focuses on new technologies and tradition. Their approach to art is based on strong structures and precise techniques.

This show is also based on blending diverse cultures and comes as a common platform for artistes from varied backgrounds at the festival. Sangeeta who has performed social activism
(portraying issues like landmine victims, sex workers, abused children and refugees) through her dance, will perform on gender issues in this show.

“This concept came from thinking about what is reality and what is illusion. What’s inside your mind is your reality. And then I thought that this platform can be used to express my thoughts on issues. Like I had once done a show on how people should deal with aids. It’s art with social activism through innovation,” she says.

Where and when?
St Andrews Auditorium,
Bandra, on January 19.

SPOTLIGHT
Gender issues being brought to light through various  media. It is also heralded as a confluence of cultures.
