Dimple Kapadia’s character in Dil Chahta Hai resisted love till she surrendered to death. Tabu fought for her love for an elderly Amitabh Bachchan till her father consented in Cheeni Kum. Gul Panag found her life crumbling when love entered ever so unsuspectingly in Turning 30!!!

Wondering what they have in common? They are all stories of people past their so-called prime, well into their 30s. Age doesn’t just affect women, though. Govinda is set to play a man dealing with post-30 issues in Naughty@40, albeit comically.

The recent film Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji also showed the hesitance a post-30 Ajay Devgn experiences while wooing his love interest. Bollywood, it seems, is smitten by middle age, as it explores the 30s crisis.

Recent research says that pregnancy post 35 is a new-age phenomenon. It also indicates that many in the 30-plus age bracket opt for cosmetic surgery, while others seek psychiatric help to battle stress. “The change happens at all levels — social, physical and psychological. For unmarried men, the match-making process gets in full throttle. For women, it’s the final frontier for marriage. There’s also the societal pressure to have kids,” says behavioural expert Dr Hemant Mittal. Economic independence and the trend of late pregnancy have led to changing social patterns.

Director Alankrita Shrivastava of Turning 30!!! says, “The belief that life has to be sorted at 30 is a universal phenomenon. It’s the age when you feel grown up, and the pressures of not being single, of having to be in control of your life crop up. Problems stem from the fact that we’re a generation grappling with tradition and modernity simultaneously.”

Says actor Dipannita Sharma, “It’s not always about some frustrated 40-year-old who wants to get a babe.” The need to look good, be fit and have financial security come into play at this age. “The biological clocks ticks by and it bothers women,” says Alankrita, “But you hit a low only when life’s not hunky dory and you start questioning if you’re not good enough because you’re not young enough.”
