Dubai’s glittering gold souk may be a feast for your eyes. But besides the razzle-dazzle, visitors are flocking to the emirates to catch a glimpse of its tall and gleaming story.

Dubai’s towering glory — Burj Khalifa — which opened on Monday, has become a must-visit spot for Bangloreans on a shopathon to the annual one-month Dubai Shopping Festival that begins on January 28.

Rakesh P, director, Jagdish Tours said that over the past four days they have received a flurry of calls about the latest attraction. “Burj Khalifa ranks among the must-visits, like the Radisson’s revolving restaurant. We expect a 15-20% rise in tourists this year from last year. Despite hike in prices, travellers remain undeterred,” he said.

Brand consultant Harish Bijoor will also be visiting the “new mecca of shoppers” and will be looking at the business dimensions the building may attract.

Ashwin Narayanan, vice president, sales and marketing, Travels Tours said that they are expecting a 15% growth in travellers over last year, thanks to the Burj Khalifa.

Travel agencies have also tied up with many airlines to promote better offers to shoppers. V Chandrasekar, senior manager, corporate communications, Air India, Bangalore, said that the load factor has definitely gone up in the four flights that the airline operates each week from Bangalore to Dubai.

He added that the Burj Khalifa was one of the factors leading to the rise in passengers. Impossible is nothing for the shopaholics since many from Bangalore are ready to catch their flights from neighbouring cities like Hyderabad and Chennai.

Girish Nair, regional general manager, Jet Airways, for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, said that the flights to Dubai from Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi are seeing an increase in the number of passengers heading for the shopping festival.
