The unique folk music festival that brought international music icon Mick Jagger to Jodhpur in 2007 — the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) — has been scheduled for October 1 to 5, 2009.

The festival — a partnership project between India’s two heritage trusts — the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and the Jaipur Virasat Foundation aims to celebrate the spirit of folk music.

Speaking on the local talent pool that are the star attraction of this festival, Divya Bhatia, festival director, says, “Music has been in the blood of Rajasthan. But so far there have been few attempts made to nourish and develop the brilliant talent of these local artistes. Finding out new ways to sustain their talent is crucial. One way we are doing is to make the world aware of their existence.”

Over 100 local folk artists will have a chance to perform with six national musicians and singers and three international ones. The Jaipur Virasat Foundation conducted a year long research to select these 100 potential artists. Singer Rekha Bhardwaj who has recently given big hits such as Genda Phool from Dehli 6 will be sharing the stage with traditional Maand singers such as Rehana Mirza and Bhanwari Devi. Ace drummer Sivamani will be performing too.

Other national artistes performing include Ustad Sultan Khan, Lakha Khan Manganiyaar. The international artistes performing this year are Denise Belfon, Spanish Guitarist Antonio Ray and Flamenco dancer, Farruco.

Flashback
The Jodhpur RIFF is a high-end cultural event that stirred up quite a bit of attention with its first undertaking in 2007 itself. The second festival was scheduled to take place at the Mehrangarh Fort in October 2008, but due to an unfortunate tragedy at Jodhpur’s Chamunda Devi temple in September 2008, the much awaited festival was cancelled — a sign of respect for all the victims of the tragedy.
