Amrish Kumar is taking a leap

Amrish Kumar doesn’t like to call him himself a designer as he feels that he is more like a manager who got into designing as it was the need of the hour. But as designing came to him naturally, his style is more minimalist and shape-oriented unlike his mother — acclaimed designer Ritu Kumar, known for her detailed embroidery work.

“It’s a mixed bag, There is a fair share of misunderstandings because you are working with a loved one, and in this case, the relationship cannot get any closer than this.” says Amrish. So, how does the mother-son team work so well? “My mother and I share a lot of similar ideas on fashion

aesthetics,” he says. The line he works on is timeless but practical clothing that is moving into various parts of the globe for evening wear; it seems the brand is scoring high on the buyer’s list.

He feels Indian aesthetics are something that every Indian designer should take on a global platform, as that is the USP.

“Our Indian craft is very well received in the world so we ensure that it is well offered. It can be well blended with modern styling —that is what makes it special.”

On his line being a hit with Hollywood celebs, he says, “We hit on the right opportunity at the right time and are receiving a good response from our LA store. Celebs like Mischa Barton and Mel B have been sporting the outfits. We are trying to expose the best traditions in a modern silhouette which they have liked.”
