A 53-year-old woman teacher was stabbed by an unidentified teenager in front of her Class II students inside the classroom of a MCD-run school in east Delhi this morning.

Bitti Bhan was in Class II-B of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Girls School in Trilokpuri of Mayur Vihar Phase-II when the attacker, who had covered his face with a piece of cloth, attacked her with a knife.

The attack was made at around 11.35 am and the assailant, who appeared to be lean and aged anywhere between 18-19, managed to flee from the school after the incident.

The teenager entered Bhan's classroom asking "which one is Class IV" and assaulted her. Bhan, who was sitting on a chair, suffered injuries on her left thigh, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place in front of her students. They started screaming. The staff rushed her to Lal Bhadur Shastri Hospital. She was discharged after primary treatment," the official said.

The teacher said she had no enemies. "It just came to me as a surprise," she said.

The official said they were trying to find out the motive behind the attack.

"As the teacher has ruled out any personal rivalry with anyone, we are in the dark. We are investigating the matter from all angles," the official said.

The official said the attacker might have managed to enter the school premises easily as the institution and an ayurvedic dispensary were operating from the same campus and both have a common entrance.

"The entry inside the school is unrestricted," he said.

Locals claimed that two men attacked the teacher to snatch her chain but police denied it.

"The attacker asked twice about Class IV, it is also possible that he wanted to attack someone else," the official said.

The incident could once again bring to the fore the issue of security in MCD schools.

The issue of providing adequate security had come up when a nine-year-old girl was raped inside an MCD school in Ashok Vihar in July last year. After that incident, the civic body had said it will deploy more security guards and civil defence personnel as well as train the students on martial arts.

Asked about today's incident, an MCD official said the security situation will be reviewed and any necessary measure will be taken.
