There will soon be no need to spend hours in long queues at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Ahmedabad to apply for a driver's licence, or for registration of your vehicle or to pay any fee. The Ahmedabad RTO will launch online facilities some time this month for all this and for several other services.

It will then be possible to fill application forms for driving licences and registration of vehicles and also pay for them and other services online. For the first time in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad RTO would be launching E-payment facility for making the payment online. The facility will become operational in a month.

Right now, RTO has entered into a collaboration with Bank of Baroda (BoI) and State Bank of India (SBI) for providing the online payment facility for RTO.

While it will be easier for the people who have an account in these two banks, other need not worry too much. Even if a person does not have an account in any of these banks, he can simply get a pay receipt from the bank.

This new facility will give a much needed fillip to the image of RTO which is alleged to be home to corrupt practices.

Earlier, licence-aspirants had to contact an agent who used to charge more than Rs500 for a form which comes for free in reality.  So, agents used to charge huge sum of money, which involved 'commission' to RTO officials too. The online payment system will do way with the agent system will ensure fair practices.

After filing the form online, a person just has to give a date to the RTO when he will be available for the procedures. RTO will give two months time to the licence seekers. The person can go to RTO as per his convenience and get the license in 15 minutes.
Talking to DNA, JM Bhatt, chief RTO officer, said, "We are striving to make the RTO cashless and men-less. Earlier, people use to run to RTO, but now they will be able to fill form from the comfort of their home. It will also help in weeding out corruption as well. This facility will save money and time of the people."
