The US has sought India’s permission to recover the remains of its personnel who died during World WarII in North-East.

There were 94 US aircraft crashes in the N-E then. The US has conducted three such missions though with not much success in 2008 and 2009, sources said.

“They have perhaps identified some places and have sought our permission to send a team. This is a humanitarian concern which predates our independence. We are considering the possibility of facilitating such a visit,” official sources said.

Meanwhile, India had detailed discussions with US on the latter’s “strategic pivot” to East Asia, and the US is learnt to have conveyed to India that it would be increasingly focusing on East Asia as its engagement with other hot spots, including Afghanistan, winds down.
