The US has said it is "very supportive" of the dialogue between India and Pakistan, which is not only in the interest of the two countries but also the regional stability.

"One of the things that is happening right now is that India and Pakistan are having their own dialogue that addresses a variety of issues from territory to some very straight forward water right issues.

"They have a number of issues that are engaged in that dialogue. The United States is very supportive of that dialogue," Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano said last evening at a Washington-based think tank.

It is in every one's interest for India and Pakistan to be able to work together, she said.

"They also believe that it is in the interest of the regional stability—India, Pakistan and Afghanistan," Napolitano said, adding they are currently focused on areas of consensus and the way forward in this regard and possibilities of strengthening that.

"The United States has an interest in a strong relationship with India. We have an interest in having strong relationship with Pakistan. Both India and Pakistan have shared interest in a stable Afghanistan.

"Finding those pathways forward, finding those areas forward, where there is mutually beneficial consensus, is what I believe we need to focus on," Napolitano said in response to a question.
