Unique welcome awaits 2nd batch of IIT-G’nagar

The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is all set to welcome its second batch of 110 students. The new students will join the institute from July 22 onwards.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is all set to welcome its second batch of 110 students. The new students will join the institute from July 22 onwards.

The new students will be counselled for five days and can look forward to a ragging-free atmosphere. What more, the seniors will also help the new batch get involved in student activities taking place at the institute. They will also introduce the new batch to various clubs like music, film, social work and theatre.

Talking about the week-long orientation programme for the new students, Prof. SK Jain, director of IIT-G said, "We are taking some new initiatives, which none of the other IITs have practiced so far." He said the week-long orientation programme will give the students an idea about the sort of life they will be living both on and off the campus.

"We will provide them with the best of facilities and in turn will demand complete dedication from them," said Jain. He said the facilities will include banking and mobile phone company counters to help the students with money and phone recharge.

"Students will undergo thorough physical and psychological health check-ups at Apollo Hospital so that the institute can understand their medical needs if any. Apart from this, there will be a communication workshop by Rashmi Datt, a human resource consultant from Gurgaon, for new students.

This will help them acclimatise with the new environment," said Jain. Students will also be counselled by Madhu Chadda, an IIT alumnus from Hyderabad.  She will give tips on how to handle studies and other issues while studying at IIT.

 "Moreover students will be accompanied by their seniors to help them get familiar with various student activities," he said. Various workshops on theatre, film, architecture appreciation has also been planned so that students can develop their hobbies.

A dietician will work with the catering department to ensure that quality and hygienic food is served to the students. A gymnasium with two instructors and hostel rooms with branded furniture and mattresses are the other things on offer.
