Chirag Thakkar, who was killed in the accident in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday evening, was an only son. His parents, Mahesh and Sarla, distraught over the loss of their son as well as his wife Sunita and children Dheya and Kunj, have been receiving family members and friends in large numbers since the news broke. The aging couple is now in an inconsolable state, so much so that they have been medicated in order to control their grief. As their neighbours say, the family have lost control of their tears.

Thakkar, a resident of Bhagwannagar Society at Govindwadi, Isanpur, had been alive for half an hour after the accident. Suffering from a brain haemorrhage, he succumbed to fear and shock, his neighbours said. Sunita was a homemaker, while the couple’s children were both students of the Seventh Day Adventist School in Maninagar. The family is survived by, in addition to Thakkar’s parents, his sisters Aarti and Deepali, both married and residing in Ahmedabad.

Thakkar’s family had earlier been financially weaker. His father had earned his livelihood by selling milk on the roadside, while the family had resided at Laxmi Colony in Raipur. The financial condition, however, had seen an improvement in the last four to five years. Thakkar owned a pipe factory, while a second was to be inaugurated a few days after the family’s return from vacation. He maintained a good reputation in society and his family was held in high regard. However, Thakkar was prone to accidents, suffering 12 before his untimely death on Sunday.

“Maheshbhai has been facing problems his entire life. He earned his money little by little in his youth and with great difficulty was able to educate his son. Today, when he has finally begun to see good days, his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren passed away,” said Arvind Shah, a friend of Mahesh Thakkar.

After the accident, the Thakkar family had been initially unaware of the fate of their kin. A neighbour, Harinbhai, witnessed the news on the television and alerted them about the development. Mahesh Thakkar then made enquiries into the matter and found out that his son and his son’s family had died in an accident while on holiday.
