Tripura to have separate high court

A separate high court for Tripura is no longer a distant dream with the Centre contemplating to place a bill in Parliament for it, official sources said on Saturday.

Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid during a meeting with the state law secretaries said that a bill seeking setting up of a separate high court in Tripura would be tabled in the Lok Sabha on April 24, Tripura Law Secretary, Data Mohan Jamatiya told reporters here.

Jamatiya attended the meeting held at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi on Friday.

If the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, the major obstacle for setting up a full-fledged bench of the high court would be removed.

Organisations of lawyers in the state have been demanding a separate high court. Currently, Tripura comes under the purview of the Gauhati High Court.

Earlier, an all party team also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with the same demand.

Two years ago then union minister V Moily had inaugurated a building for a separate high court here.
