As prices of food items continue to spiral northward, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar called upon state governments on Sunday  to “protect the interests of consumers” and make serious attempts to tackle the situation.

The NCP president said at the party’s fourth national convention in Delhi that a majority of states were not cooperating in curbing prices. “Some states are providing cereals and pulses at affordable rates… but many are yet to act,” he said.

Pawar said the UPA government made “all possible efforts” to isolate people from the effects of drought earlier this year. There was drought in at least 312 districts in 12 states due to monsoon failure, he said.

Calling it a global phenomenon, Pawar said, “In spite of global recession, our government brought down inflation to a single digit. But the rise in the price of essential commodities is unprecedented and has made the commoner’s life difficult. The government is making determined efforts to contain prices.”

Admitting that the kharif crop had been severely hit, the agriculture minister said, “I appeal to all state governments to take the issue of price rise seriously and protect consumer interest. The Centre will provide all possible help.”
