After being in news for all the wrong reasons for almost a week now, Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi on Monday resigned as party spokesperson and chairman of parliamentary standing committee on law, justice and personnel and grievances to avert embarrassment to the government in the second half of the budget session beginning on Tuesday.

Singhvi sent in his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

“Even if he has resigned the reasons have to be taken up. If it is true then it should go to the ethics committee, but if CD is fabricated, as claimed by Singhvi, then this should be taken up by privileges committee,” said BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

In an aggressively worded statement, Singhvi said he has resigned only to prevent even the slightest possible Parliamentary disruption regarding the purported CDs being circulated about him. “I did not think it fit to subject the party to any inconvenience on this account. All allegations are patently baseless and false,” he said in a statement.
