Travelling by BRTS buses will soon become even more comfortable.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to add luxury buses to the BRTS fleet. In fact, the civic body is already reported to be in talks with two leading luxury bus manufacturers - Mercedez Benz and Volvo - for the new vehicles.

AMC bosses are of the opinion that as the Ahmedabad BRTS has been a success and has acquired an international reputation for excellence, it should now run high quality buses on the BRTS route.

"There is a marked difference in commuting in an Ahmedabad BRTS bus and a luxury bus," said an official of the Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL). The more comfortable luxury buses would give Ahmedabad people a wholly new commuting experience, the official added.

The civic body has been considering the two leading luxury bus-makers from before the recent civic election but, at a meeting of the AJL on Saturday, the new AMC bosses also expressed their approval of the idea of having luxury buses in the BRTS fleet.

However, they did not expressly name any specific company, sources said. Incidentally, AJL is also mulling the option of using only air-conditioned (AC) buses on the BRTS route. The AJL is also conducting a feasibility study to assess the financial viability of luxury buses in the BRTS fleet.

The high cost of the buses and their high maintenance cost are important factors that have to be taken into account. The company, Volvo, has the experience of operating BRT buses in Curitiba (Brazil), Bogotá (Colombia), Mexico City (Mexico), Göteborg (Sweden) and Santiago (Chile).

The AMC bosses have been encouraged to run luxury buses on the BRTS route by the fact that a majority of the commuters have shown a willingness to pay higher fares for comfortable travel. However, municipal commissioner IP Gautam could not be contacted for his comments.
