The Delhi police on Sunday arrested a 25-year-old software engineer for allegedly making a hoax call to delay a GoAir flight to Bangalore after realising that he would not reach the airport on time.

Abhishek Gupta, who was on his way from Lucknow on the Gorakhnath Express, was to reach the capital at 6am, and then catch the Bangalore-bound flight at 8.45am. But his train got delayed.

Gupta, who works for software giant Infosys, first called up the GoAir call centre, asking the airline to reschedule his journey.

When the airline staff denied his request, Gupta called up GoAir and told a commercial manager in Mumbai that there was some suspicious object on the plane.

Gupta’s call threw security officials at the Indira Gandhi International airport into a tizzy, forcing GoAir to ground its flight with 164 people on board just before takeoff. A bomb disposal squad, with the help of sniffer dogs, searched the aircraft.
Gupta believed that his call would help him buy some time and catch the flight, the police said.

But the engineer made one mistake: he had called up from his cell phone, helping the police track him down. He was arrested around 9.30am when he arrived at the GoAir counter and asked for the boarding pass.

The flight took off for Bangalore after a delay of more than two hours.

Gupta, the police said, has confessed to have made the hoax call. He faces strict action, broth from the police and his employer.

When contacted, a senior HR executive from Infosys confirmed that Gupta was one of their employees. “The company will set up a panel to inquire into the matter and suitable action will be taken against Gupta after the panel submits its report,” the HR executive said.

The software engineer, who has been booked under sections 182 (giving false information to a public servant), 505 (circulation of false statement or rumour) and 342 (wrongfully confining any person), will be produced in a Delhi court on Monday.
