When 111 tabla players came together in the open air theatre on the banks of the historic lake, the pitch was high enough to reach havens and the note was powerful enough to reach the souls of the audience. Performing in five different ways, including peshker, pranami, ikhathhuparam and famous tukda, the musicians set the tone for the rest of the musical night.

The event was part of the first evening of the two-day Tana Riri music fest, organised in memory of the singer sisters who treated Tansen. The programme was kick-started with lightning of lamps at open air theatre near Sarmishtha lake in Vadnagar in Mehsana district on Tuesday. The scintillating performance on tabla was followed by sitar and vocal performances. The later was by winner of Pandit Omkarnath music competition, Hemali Vyas.

Tana Riri festival honours the story of Tana and Riri, two singers from Vadnagar who were Naagar sisters. It is said that the famous court musician of Emperor Akbar, Tansen, sang Deepak Raag so fervently that the unlit lamps were lit and he was affected with a burning fever. Knowing that only hearing the pure rendering of the Megh Malhar Raag, he headed for Vadnagar where Tana and Riri sang for him and brought him back to health.

Inspired by this quality of singing, Akbar summoned them to his court but owing to the conservative norms of the community and society, rather than refusing or disobeying Akbar's summon, these two sisters immolated themselves at Vadnagar. A samadhi is created in Vadnagar called Tana Riri samadhi and the annual classical music festival is held near this samadhi.

Present on the event were several ministers from state government, including sports and
culture minister Fakir Vaghela, health minister Jaynarayan Vyas, urban development minister Nitin Patel, and education minister Ramanalal Vora.
