The new superintendent of police will be stationed in Ahmedabad. At present, there is only one SP for the Western Railway in Gujarat and the official is based in Vadodara.
The decision comes in the wake of increased terror threats to Gujarat. The railway network is perceived as vulnerable to terror attacks, besides providing transportation to terrorists. Strengthening the security and improving the policing of railway network will help the government check the terror threat a lot more effectively.
The state police are said to have completed all the preliminary formalities for appointment of a new superintendent of rail police in Ahmedabad. "The decision will make the railways as well as the commuters more secure from the ever-increasing terror threat," a senior official in the police department told DNA.
Sources in the department that after the terror attacks in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and other major cities in India last year, the governments in Gujarat and other states had realised the importance of beefing up security of railway stations and related infrastructure.
It is learnt that once a new SP is appointed in Ahmedabad, the policing activity in the Western Railway will be divided into two parts and this will result in more focused watch on the movement of people.
To enhance the security, the police department will also have new hi-tech equipment deployed at major railway stations in Gujarat. "The equipment will be used to record the passengers' movements at railway stations. New and advanced equipment will also be acquired to thwart any eventuality of terrorist attacks on trains as well as railway stations," a senior police official told DNA.
Confirming the development, superintendent of police, Vadodara, ND Solanki told DNA that the new SP will be appointed soon and posted in Ahmedabad.
However, the exact increase in the number of personnel is not known, but it is likely to be effective in curbing the crime and also prevent terrorist attacks on the railways in this part of the country.
