Surat records good rain on Sunday

Heavy showers were recorded in catchment areas of Tapi. Though roads were waterlogged, no untoward incidents were reported during the day.

Rains lashed Surat and South Gujarat region on Sunday, with good showers recorded in majority of areas in the region. Heavy showers were also recorded in catchment areas of Tapi. Though roads were waterlogged, no untoward incidents were reported during the day.

Showers began in Surat from afternoon and within two hours, 2.5 inches of rain was recorded. In few places, water remained on the roads for hours, choking the sewerage system and disrupting vehicular movement. As outflow from Ukai dam got reduced on Sunday, weir-cum-causeway was opened for traffic. With rains in South Gujarat region, water level in rivulets raised and touched 6 metre mark in the evening, against danger level of 8 metres.

Other areas of South Gujarat region also received good rains on Sunday. Overall, Navsari district recorded five inches of rain, while Valsad district recorded 4 inches of rains. Bardoli taluka of Surat district got the maximum 4.5 inches of rains. Other talukas too received normal to medium showers. Dangs district has been receiving rains for the past one week, while three talukas of Tapi district recorded showers on Sunday.

No casualties were reported in the entire region including Surat, because of rains. Following predictions by met department of heavy rains in the next 48 hours, preventive measures have been taken by administration and the SMC in Surat. Civic fire brigade is on alert, while water level is being monitored in low-lying areas.
