Surat district gets 10 inches of rain in 10 hours

Majority of villages in the Oldpad taluka cut off as rainwater floods check-dams and causeways.

After Dangs, Olpad taluka of Surat district received record amount of rains on Monday, with the region receiving 10 inches of showers in a span of just 10 hours.

Heavy rains disrupted normal life in Olpad as rainwater flooded river and rivulets passing from the area. Many villages also got cut-off due to heavy waterlogging. Besides Olpad, Surat and South Gujarat also received good showers on Monday.

It started raining at Olpad taluka late on Sunday night, although with lesser intensity. By Monday morning, heavy rains began lashing all areas of the taluka and continued till evening. The intensity of rains was so high that 299mm of rain was recorded at Olpad between 6am and 4pm on Monday.

According to figures provided by flood control department in Surat, 56mm rain was recorded between 6am to 12pm. This peaked at 147mm between 12pm and 2pm, and dropped to 97mm between 2pm and 4pm.

Many villages lost contact from Olpad and nearby villages as water overflowed from bridges, causeways and check-dams. Villages like Isanpore, Sayan, Kalanj, Vadoli and others became isolated till late in the evening, forcing people to stay indoors.

Surat city and South Gujarat also received good rains on Monday. The city witnessed rains throughout the day, and recorded 55mm till 6pm. Flooding occurred in low lying areas at Adajan, Varaccha, Udhna, Amroli and Chowk-bazaar. However, no casualties were reported.

Surat district also recorded rains on Monday, with all talukas getting ample showers. Owing to rains in Tapi catchment area, rule level at Ukai dam touched 312.32feet on Monday. The dam received inflow of 20,000 cusecs till evening. Met department has predicted medium to heavy rains in next 48 hours.

Rains also lashed Navsari, Valsad and Dangs districts of South Gujarat. In 12 hours, Navsari district recorded four inches of rain till evening, while Valsad and Dangs recorded six and seven inches respectively. Heavy rains are predicted in the area in the next 48 hours
