After hitting reality pocket, these students’ dreams of a high-flying career as flight steward may have crashed, but not their determination to fight back. Some 14 students are now on a warpath to get their fee refunded and are knocking on the doors of the Capt. Sunil Singh, director of International Institute of Flying Staff on Ashram Road for their dues.

The students, most of who belong to different districts of Gujarat, were lured by the institute’s promise of 100% job guarantee as air steward and stewardess. “We were charged Rs60,000 for a three month course and also given a job guarantee. But since 2008, we have not been given jobs nor is the director willing to refund our money,” said Dushyant Patel an ex-student of the institute.

Another student, Neelam Chaudhary said that they have in all spent Rs1,00,000 to study here. “Now we have lost our money with no job prospects whatsoever. The director even tried to send us to call centres and car show-rooms to get ‘work experience’ after promising us a career in the aviation industry.”

According to the students, so far around 600 students have been ‘duped’ by the institute. Their batch alone had 60 students.

When DNA spoke to Capt Sunil Singh, who claims to be the director of the institute, said, “We never offered a job guarantee. In all we have trained some 300 students and of this 100 have been placed in the aviation sector.” He said the downturn in the aviation industry was the reason why he couldn’t place students who passed out in 2008. When asked for a list of students who were placed, he said the institute did not keep a record of students who were placed! Capt Singh’s claim about job guarantee also falls apart as the prospectus of the institute boldly claims the same.

When asked as to why students trained for the aviation sector were sent to call centres and car show rooms for interview, he said it was to help them gain ‘experience’. He could not convince as to how these places could provide an ‘experience’ for the aviation industry.
