Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Wednesday condemned the attack on media persons in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi city by Samajwadi Party workers, and said strong action should be taken against those responsible.

"I strongly condemn the attack of the Samajwadi Party (SP) style against the mediapersons. Strong action should be taken against all concerned. Chandrapal Singh Yadav, who is a treasurer of the state Samajwadi Party, he should not only be expelled by the Samajwadi Party, he should be put behind bars if Mr Akhilesh Yadav and Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav mean what they say," he told the media in Delhi.

Supporters of the Samajwadi Party clashed with some TV cameramen in Jhansi on Tuesday during which some of their equipments were broken.

The violence started after Samajwadi Party candidate Chandrapal Singh Yadav was found trailing by over 4000 votes to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Krishna Pal Singh Rajpoot.

Supporters of the Samajwadi Party candidate pelted stones and held 15 video journalists and cameramen hostage at a counting centre in Jhansi after they captured the workers creating a ruckus. Some mediapersons were also reported to be injured in the incident.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has assured that strict action will be initiated against all those who took the law into their hands.

The incident, however, reminded of the breakdown in the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh during the earlier regime of Samajwadi Party (SP).
