The day won't be far when mothers will get medical assistance from experts in the form of SMSes in their mobile phones.

In a project called 'Mother and child tracking system' that will be started by the state government to reduce maternal mortality rate and child mortality rate, child-bearing women up to 49 years old and children of up to 15 years of age, will be tracked online. These mothers will receive timely SMSes to alert them to visit doctors, take medicines, or go to the hospital with their children for vaccines and so on.

The project was outlined by the state minister of health, Jaynarayan Vyas, on Wednesday at IIMA during a book-launch event on midwifery and maternal care called 'Midwifery and Maternal Health in India: Situation Analysis and Lessons from the field'.

He said, "I expect the pilot project to begin in the next three months."

Referring to the current IMR of the state of around 50 per 1000 live births, Vyas said, "I hope the rate will be reduced to around 20 or below by 2012 through this project."

Vyas said that the project aims to reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the state.  Vyas said, "Almost 1.3 crore of the state's population is covered under the programme.  They will be tracked from the point of conception to the delivery and vaccination of the children. In that way, not only will the mothers be well attended, but the children will also be taken care of."

Talking about the project's advantages, Vyas said that the system will allow planners to know details like how many mothers are expecting delivery and who they are, what the dates of deliveries are, what their family statuses are and how many children they already have and so on.

He said, "It will be in a way a management information system that ultimately looks into the child mortality rate. Almost 70% of child mortality occurs during the first one month. So if you are able to monitor the first month, a lot of reduction could be made in the IMR which will lessen the overall child mortality rate as well."

"We are aiming to achieve the lowest IMR and the MMR amongst all the states in the country," he said.
