Ramol police nabbed six people for carrying beef in a mini truck near CTM crossroads early on Tuesday morning. The arrests came after members of Gau Raksha Samiti, an NGO working for the welfare of cows, pelted stones at the vehicle and alerted cops to the illegal transport of the meat.

According to Paresh Vegad, president of the Gujarat chapter of Gau Raksha Samiti, NGO workers received information of the meat being transported near CTM crossroads at around 5.30 am on Tuesday.

“We came to know that a mini truck carrying the meat was passing through the area. We asked them peacefully to stop the vehicle but they did not listen to us,” said Vegad. When the truck did not stop despite protests, members of the group started pelting stones at the vehicle, forcing it to come to a halt. They prevented the six people in the truck from escaping and informed the Ramol police who arrested them.

Slaughter of the cow and trade of its meat is banned and punishable by law.

The accused are Allarakha Sheikh, Jainuddin Sheikh, Yunus Sheikh, Salim Sheikh, Ahmed Qureshi and Shakeel Qureshi, all residents on Behrampura and Danilimda.

Ramol police sub-inspector (PSI) GM Solanki said, “The accused were bringing the meat into the city from Nadiad. Investigations are on to find out where it was being taken to and who the buyers are.”
