Saputara in Gujarat, popularly known as the state’s ‘Cherapunji’, is all set to have a huge water source all of its own. The state government is planning to build a 45-metre tall rock-filled dam in Saputara, which will fulfil the water requirements of the hill station
as well as its neighbouring areas.

Saputara is known to receive the highest rainfall in Gujarat, even though it ironically suffers from a water crisis throughout the year.

State tourism minister Jaynarayan Vyas said, “As a part of the state government’s efforts to promote Saputara as a tourism destination, adequate supply of water is also necessary. The existing lake is not sufficient for supplying water to the whole area, and so the government has decided to build a new lake which will act as a dam. This new lake will be a 45-metre tall, rock-filed dam.
It will cost around Rs20 crore. We are issuing tenders very soon, and once the contract is awarded, it will take around a year and a half for completion”.

Vyas further said, “The dam will help in developing the lake front also, which will boost the hospitality industry here. We are planning to introduce water sports and floating restaurants here, among other things. We are also aiming to build an eco-friendly self- sustained township in the vicinity of the proposed lake.”

Along with the new lake, the government has planned to develop a first-of-its-kind butterfly garden in Saputara, added Vyas.
