Trinamool Congress today asked the Union home ministry to restrain West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee from making "threatening" speeches and trying to "gag" the voice of the opposition in the state.

Drawing the attention of home minister P Chidambaram to Bhattacharjee's reported remarks at a recent rally in Kolkata, Trinamool leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said the chief minister "is making heinous attempts to gag the voice of the opposition".

"His style of talking in public meetings are totally against the norms and practices of parliamentary democratic system and (is) harmful for democracy," Bandopadhyay said in a letter to Chidambaram.

He quoted Bhattacharjee as saying in a public meeting that Trinamool chief and railway minister Mamata Banerjee would not be allowed to create chaos in the state and asking as to why she had visited troubled Darjeeling or Maoist violence-hit Lalgarh or Jungalmahal.

The Trinamool leader in Lok Sabha asked the home minister to "restrain" Bhattacharjee from making speeches which were "full of provocation and threat".

The chief minister is to be asked and clarification sought from him as to "why he is delivering such type of aggressive and violent speeches", Bandopadhyay said in the letter, adding that the "chief minister should behave like a chief minister".

He said Bhattacharjee had no doubt in his mind that he was "going to be thrown out of power by the people of West Bengal in the next assembly elections."
