Former DGP RB Sreekumar has given clarifications and documents supporting the affidavits that he filed before the Nanavati-Shah panel to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the apex court to probe the Godhra carnage and the post-Godhra riots of 2002.

Sources close to the development said that Sreekumar had given a 48-page statement to SIT as corroboration of the affidavits that he had filed before the panel. It was on the basis of these affidavits and the ones filed by few other officials that Zakia Jafri, wife of slain MP Ahesan Jafri had filed a complaint in the high court against chief minister Narendra Modi and others.

In her complaint, Jafri had alleged that higher ups had aided and abetted the riots. Sreekumar's statement was taken over a period of seven days by officials of SIT. The team finished recording the statements of Sreekumar on August 4, sources said.

In his affidavits filed before the panel, Sreekumar had thrown light on the role of intelligence agencies after the Godhra incident and how policemen and bureaucrats responded during the riots. It is worthy to note that this is the first time that SIT has recorded the statements of Sreekumar which can prove to be of pivotal importance for the investigation agency.

A reliable source said, "The statements were recorded not in connection with a particular case but in connection to the act of commission and omission during the riots by a few people. The statements were recorded in connection with the conspiracy of the riots."

When contacted Sreekumar told DNA, "I have given clarification and embellishments on the contention given in my four affidavits filed before the panel." Although officials of SIT did not divulge details of the statement of Sreekumar, they confirmed that the statement was recorded. A SIT official said, "We have finished recording statements of Sreekumar in reference to the plea of Zakia Jafri."

Jafri's had filed an application in the apex court challenging the decision of the Gujarat high court to dismiss the plea which sought a registration of a complaint against Modi and others for their alleged role in the Gulberg society riots of 2002.
