In a rare operation, a team of doctors here successfully conducted a bilateral knee replacement surgery on a 93-year-old man.

SN Bhatt, who underwent the surgery at the Apollo Hospital in Delhi, is one of the oldest men in the country to have undergone such a procedure, doctors claim.

A retired principal of a college at Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, Bhatt is now able to walk with the help of a walker.

"I am a living example for the people who think that there is no life after the age of 60. Age should not be a barrier to lead a good quality life. People who are above 60 should stop feeling miserable and think of living a quality life," he said.

The problem started for Bhatt ten years ago when he was diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

"He came to us in 2010 with a history of osteoarthritis for the past ten years. He had been confined to using a wheel chair to ambulate as the disease led to progressive knee pain and deformity in both the legs," Dr Raju Vaishya, senior consultant, Orthopaedics at Apollo Hospital who carried out bilateral total knee replacement surgery on Bhatt, said.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors led by Dr Vaishya, carried out the surgery successfully in a single day on April 14.

"He is the oldest man in the country to have undergone this surgery. Though a surgery at this age is a risky affair if other complications are involved, in Bhatt's case there was none so it became easy to conduct the surgery. He is an active man and physically active with no additional aging ailments," Dr Vaishya said.

"It proves the point that in some selected and determined patients with good medical condition, it is possible to replace both the knees in single stage even at the age of 93," he added.

Amitabh Bhatt, son of the 93-year-old, said, "My father has always led an active life. Apart from having keen interest in horses, he was an avid hockey player and had played with the legendary, Dhyanchand."
