On the day Gujarat high court handed over probe into the Sadik Jamal encounter case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), city police nabbed a man pretending to be an official of the same central agency from Kalupur.

The man has been identified as Mahendrasingh Ravat, a native of Rajasthan, Kalupur police inspector (PI) DS Patel said.

He was detained with three others when they were driving in an Alto near Kalupur railway station between 7:30 and 8:00pm on Thursday.

Kalupur police sub-inspector (PSI) SV Vasava stopped Ravat's car near the railway station's entrance during random vehicle checking and asked the driver to show his licence.

However, instead of producing the licence, the driver told Vasava that it was a CBI officer's car, the PI further said.

The PSI asked Ravat, who was sitting in the back seat of the car, to show his identity card. The CBI card identified Ravat as a 38-year-old officer of the agency from Sumerpur in Rajasthan.

However, Vasava found the I-card to be dubious and asked him to show the RC book of the car. Ravat produced two RC books but both of them had different chassis number and engine number of the car.

Following the detection of forged documents, the PSI detained Ravat, his driver Hadmat Prajapati and two others-Jenti Sumera and Paras Kumavat-who were travelling with Ravat.

Later on, police also seized two voter identity cards from Ravat with each bearing his photographs but having different names. The man in one of the cards was identified as Mahendrasingh Ravat, in the other, he was named Manjitsingh.

Further investigations revealed that the four were employees of a Rajasthan-based private finance company and had come to Ahmedabad for recruiting local sub-agents.

Police have seized the Alto car and filed a case against Ravat for using fake identity.
