Punjab announces Rs1 crore relief for Leh flood victims

'There has been a natural calamity in Leh which has resulted in loss of many precious lives and devastation to the infrastructure,' said deputy chief minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Punjab state government today announced a relief of Rs1 crore for the rehabilitation of cloudburst and flash flood victims of Leh district in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.

"There has been a natural calamity in Leh which has resulted in loss of many precious lives and devastation to the infrastructure. The Punjab government will provide Rs1 crore relief for the rehabilitation of the victims," deputy chief minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal told reporters.

Badal met chief minister Omar Abdullah at latter's residence here. He visited Leh along with a delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal MPs and MLAs, said his Punjab government will also adopt one affected village in Leh district.

"Whatever the cost of restoring the infrastructure will be borne by Punjab government," the SAD chief said. 

Badal also adopted a nine-year-old girl, orphaned by the natural calamity, she was already studying in a school in Chandigarh.

During his visit to Leh, Badal formally handed over 11 truck loads of relief material to Tsering Dorje, chief executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh.

Realising shortage of feed for animals, Badal announced that Punjab would soon dispatch a consignment of 15000 bales of hay stock besides 25000 quintals of animal feed.

He also announced a cash relief of Rs5 lakh each to two Sikh families from SAD, whose shops were washed away in flash flood.

Badal also gave away Rs5 lakh for the reconstruction of  Gurudwara Sri Pathar Sahib and visited the relief camp set
up in Solar Colony to give shelter to displaced victims.

The deputy chief minister offered Punjab government's support in massive reconstruction activity required to provide shelter to victims before the onset of winter in Leh.

He also met Nawang Rigzing Jora, tourism minister and local Administration to know how Punjab could help them in
this hour of crisis.

Later, Badal paid obeisance at Gurdwara Pathar Sahib, damaged due to the flash floods.
