Protests against corruption continues in Shillong

Hundreds of protesters representing various organizations today took to the streets here expressing solidarity with anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and vowed to continue the struggle till an acceptable Lokpal bill is placed and passed in Parliament.

Activists of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (GCCM), Art of Living, Central Puja Pommittee, Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Civil Society of Women Organisation (CSWO), Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), Meghalaya Trade Union and others participated in the rally organised in the city.

"Although the fast of Anna Hazare has come to an end, the struggle will continue since the Lokpal Bill is yet to see the light of the day," said Joe Marwien, an FKJGP leader.

The students felt "the movement has inspired the young generation of the country and will bring long-term results".

"We will take this forward, because this is for the future of our country and our future. It's a new awakening for the country's youth. It brings inspiration and hope that change can be brought," said Relevency Nongrum, a student.

Leading the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, John F Kharsiing recalled the contribution of Gandhi and the great leaders born in this world. "The bill is yet be passed but I am happy that Anna Hazare's fast has helped us to see this day. However, unless the bill finally sees the light of the day, we should not relent."

The Meghalaya Right to Information Movement (MRIM) asked the government to initiate an wide-ranging, geographically dispersed pre-legislative consultations on the features and content of the anti-corruption body before drafting the bill.

The MRIM prepared a set of suggestions on which a signature campaign has been launched.

They wanted the anti-corruption body to be independent, transparency and participatory selection of commissioners, pro-active powers to the anti-corruption body and a strong relationship with RTI.
