It is Pakistan’s job to investigate the role of Jamaat-ud-Daawa chief Hafiz Saeed in the 26/11 terror strikes as all the evidence lies on its soil, Union home minister P Chidambaram has said.

Saeed, who was booked last week in two cases for inciting people to “wage jihad against infidels”, has been placed under house arrest in Lahore. His movements have been restricted to prevent him from addressing people during Eid prayers at the Gaddafi stadium, news agencies quoted a senior Lahore police officer as saying.

Chidambaram on Monday said: “If it (Saeed’s arrest) is a face-saving technique, I have no objections. My demand is that now that he has been arrested… his role in the 26/11 attacks must be investigated.”

On Pakistan demanding more evidence, he said: “The evidence is not on Indian soil; all the evidence against Hafiz Saeed is on Pakistani soil.” Chidambaram said Pakistan’s  progress in the 26/11 probe “so far seems to be [an] eyewash”.
