Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse a mob staging a road blockade to protest the death of a man in a road accident in Orissa's Jajpur district, police said today.

A couple of Aliabad village under Bari police station area were returning from a market place on motorcycle when their two-wheeler collided with a van near Kabirput, 20 km from here last evening, according to deputy superintendent of police, Dipti Roy.

While the man, identified as Bhismadev Dash (33), died, his wife Bijayalaxmi (28) was critically injured and shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack, she said.

Angry over the accident, local residents captured the driver of the van and locked him in a room before blocking the Kuakhia-Jajpur road demanding adequate compensation to the deceased's family. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to the road blockade, Roy said.

Police force was sent to the spot to prevent any untoward incident even as talks were held with the protesters to settle the matter, police said.

Mild lathicharge was carried out to disperse the mob as talks failed, the DSP said.
