It was a pocket goldmine that the Ellisbridge police hit on Thursday morning after chasing an Apache rider vrooming on the road following a Bollywood style chase.

They recovered six gold chains from the pocket of twenty-something Mausin Malek during a massive combing exercise started on Thursday morning.

Malek, an accused in various offences of chain snatching in the posh Ellisbridge area, was driving his Apache bike when the police started chasing him. The chase ended with the police apprehending him a few kilometres away.

Police inspector of Ellisbridge police station, JB Gadhvi told DNA that the police were patrolling the area when they received a tip-off about a youth in a black jacket who had snatched a chain from someone and was on the run.

"As soon as we spotted Malek, we started chasing him and nabbed him," said Gadhvi. The team members of the Ellisbridge police that nabbed Malek has been given a cash prize of Rs3,000 each. This prize announcement was made by Satish Sharma, JCP Sector-I.

The patrolling is part of the drive carried out by the police department on Thursday to nab those involved in offences such as chain snatching and robberies. Cases of chain snatching and robberies have shown a sharp increase in recent times. In fact at least six incidents of chain snatching were reported from various areas on a single day.

Sources said that another associate of Malek, Irshad is also on the run. Police said he too is involved in various offences. The department has started patrolling on bikes as well as mobile vans to nab offenders, sources said.

The Ahmedabad police and traffic department have launched a record-checking drive to prevent stolen vehicles from being used for criminal activities. On Thursday some 250 two-wheeler owners were detained for not carrying relevant documents.

The exercise might give vehicles-owners some hardship, but it will have an overall positive impact on policing.  Traffic police officials said often stolen vehicles are used in chain-snatching and robbery incidents.

Vehicles bought on installment basis must have photocopies of duly-attested documents or certificates to prove that the original documents were with the financier.

All owners should have copies of the driving licence, the RC book and the insurance certificate. "Vehicle owners can also help the police by informing them about any suspicious activity" said MM Anarwala, deputy commissioner of police, traffic.
