Although there might be many people who would be donating their body organs for the needy, we may not come across many who would be willing to donate their body for medical science.
Deh daan or the cadaver donation is a help sought by medical colleges for the education or the training of medical students.

Many medical colleges and social organisations have been organising awareness programmes for body donation. Patel Samaj of the Ghatlodia area is one such communtiy which has taken the initiative for the betterment of the medical science.

During the community's recent meeting held at Ghatlodia, the members of the community have filled up forms to show their commitment towards this social cause.  At least 500 members of the community have filled up the registration form to donate their bodies after their death.

"It does take lot of effort to convince the family members to donate the body of the deceased because of religious sentiments. Not many families agree to such donation," said Dr Bharat Shah, dean of B J Medical college. He added that the members of Patel community came forward to express their solidarity for the cause and have assured of carrying out many such awareness programmes in their community, and also carry the social message in other communities as well. Kiran Patel of the Patidar Patel Yuva Sangathan of Ghatlodia said that it was initially difficult to convince the members, as many believed that the last rites should be performed as per Hindu tradition. "People were aware of organ donation, but very few were aware about cadaver donation and the advantages of it." He added that at times people are apprehensive about cadaver donation and are not very convinced as they think the body would be misused. Bhavesh Patel another member of the organisation said, "It is an ongoing process and this was the beginning. We have been organising such awareness programmes during our community gatherings and we have been requesting people to fill up these forms available at our office in Ghatlodia." Dr Jitu Patel, a former MLA of Sabarmati and member of the Patel community said that the concept of organ donation is growing amongst the community members, and in every programme organised by our community, we have been spreading the message of blood and organ donation. "If students of anatomy department of medical colleges get bodies in good condition, it will help them in becoming good surgeons, which will help improve the medical education in our country,'' said Patel.

Dr Shah said that the awareness for cadaver donation was already there amongst the higher socio economic groups, but there is a need to conduct such awareness programmes even amongst the lower socio economic group. He said that colleges also conduct such awareness programmes amongst students who seek admissions in medical colleges, so that they too can spread the message amongst their family members.
