Chief minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Pandit Shyamji Krishna Verma's national memorial in the port town of Mandvi in southern Kutch on Monday.

The memorial is a replica of India House, a Victorian edifice in north London, owned by Pandit Shyamji Krishna Verma, during India's freedom struggle. It also published an anti-colonial newspaper, Indian Sociologist, the editor of which was Verma.

Verma was born in Mandvi. Thereafter, he shifted his base to Paris and then to Geneva where he breathed his last in 1930. But, it was only in 2003, 73 years after his death that their (he and his wife's) ashes were brought back to the country. The chief minister had gone to Geneva to bring back their urns as per Verma's last wishes.

The two-ashes containing urns have been kept in a memorial named 'Kranti Tirth'.

The memorial houses several buildings like Veeranjali
gallery where the story of how their ashes were brought from Geneva is narrated.

Enumerating details, Varuna Mayara, additional principal secretary and director general of the SKV memorial society said that the memorial is a world-class structure and has excellent facilities. It was built in a record time of 14 months.

He said the best lighting and carpentry services in the country were hired and Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) will be managing it.

He said that Verma was a great Sanskrit scholar and chose to fight for the country even from London. He said though England was the mother of parliamentary democracy Indians were not treated well back home and he wanted this to be conveyed to the Britishers.
