BJP today hailed the victory of its candidates in various by-polls as people's verdict against a corrupt Congress government at the Centre but was loathe to give credit to Anna Hazare and his team which campaigned in Hisar against the ruling party candidate.

HJC-BJP candidate Kuldeep Bishnoi won Hisar Lok Sabha seat while the BJP-Shiv Sena-RPI candidate in Kadakvasla (Maharashtra) Bhimrao Tapkir and NDA ally JD(U) candidate in Daraunda (Bihar) Kavita Singh won the Assembly by-polls.

"This is an auspicious day for democracy. Congress, which is neck-deep in corruption, has lost the Hisar seat. Our candidates have won in Daraunda and Kadakvasla. This is a victory of the people and of those who are raising their voice against corruption," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

It is interesting to note that in none of the three seats has Congress come second but the BJP has tried to paint these by-elections as a victory against the ruling party. While Bishnoi's nearest rival was INLD's Ajay Singh Chautala, Kavita Singh defeated Parmeshwar Singh of RJD while Bhimrao Tapkir won against NCP candidate Harshada. However, when asked if some of the credit for Bishnoi's victory goes to Team Anna as well, Hussain replied in the negative. "I have read Anna's statements. He has appealed not for victory of any candidate but for the defeat of a party," Hussain said.

Continuing the tirade against Congress, Hussain said the ruling party should stop covering up corruption. "The way the Congress has tried to suppress agitations, sit-ins and movements is deplorable.... The real test in a democracy is through votes," Hussain said.
