Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today said he would like the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to end its boycott of the ongoing session of the state Assembly in order to discuss the problems of the people.

"When I see the empty benches (PDP seats), I regret that we are weakening this House. There are still some days left for the session to end and I would like them (PDP) to reconsider their decision to boycott the proceedings," he said replying to the debate on the prevailing law and order situation in the Valley.

The main opposition party in the state Assembly are boycotting the proceedings to protest the recent killings in Kashmir Valley.

The Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly had sent an emissary to PDP for reconsidering its decision but the party said it would not budge till action was taken against erring security personnel.

The chief minister said it would have been better if the opposition party is present in the House and its members could have spoken on issues including the law and order situation.

Omar said he regretted that the mainstream politicians have not been able to talk in one political voice.

"We could not tell the people that there was no point in throwing stones, damaging the properties or going on strikes," he said in an apparent reference to PDP's silence on these issues.

The chief minister said instead of criticising the government, the opposition party could have urged the people not to attack government properties or security camps.

"Their only attempt was to bring down Omar Abdullah (government) even if this required 110 lives to be sacrificed," he said, adding the PDP members would have been present in the House if they were concerned about it. At least 110 lives have been lost during the ongoing unrest in the Valley.
