CBI searches at the residence of a Nehru Yuva Kendra employee, who was allegedly working as a conduit of former UP Health Secretary Pradeep Shukla in the NRHM scam, have led to recovery of seven property documents worth Rs5 crore and Rs75 lakhs in cash in various bank accounts.

Searches carried out at 40 locations across Uttar Pradesh yesterday by the probe agency led to recovery of important documents related to the alleged irregularities in utilisation of about Rs10,000 crore of central funds allocated under the the National Rural Health Mission scheme, CBI sources said.

The CBI came to know during the questioning of various suspects that Shukla was allegedly working through a number of middlemen with one being DK Singh, a central government employee at Nehru Yuva Kendra in Lucknow, they said.

The agency team searched the residence of Singh which led to recovery of properties worth Rs5 crore, cash 75 lakh, documents of a farm house, lockers and 12.5 kg of silver utensils worth over Rs6.5 lakh, they said.

Some more arrests in the cases related to NRHM scam may take place, they said.

During the searches at the posh Butler-palace residence of Shukla, CBI has also recovered documents of a commercial property owned by him which is not permissible as per the Central government rules, they claimed.

Shukla may be questioned next week in connection with the recoveries and implementation of NRHM schemes during his tenure, they said.

Searches at the residence of Bhukesh Kumar, MD of Construction and Design Services of UP Jal Nigam in Lucknow, have led to recovery of Rs3.5 lakh and one locker.

Similarly, 400 grams of gold were seized from the residence of Chief Engineer of PACCFED, MM Tripathi.

CBI also recovered cash worth Rs6.25 lakh from the residence of a senior official of UP Project Corporation Limited Project Director MK Jain in Muzzafarnagar, the sources said.

The probe agency had carried out searches yesterday in connection with the NRHM scam and registered three new cases for alleged fudging of funds in NRHM projects, they said.

The total cost of projects, in which these three cases have been registered, is over Rs250 crore and mainly deal with the construction and upgradation works in hospitals across Uttar Pradesh.

CBI has so far registered eight cases arising out of five preliminary inquiries initiated by it on the direction of the Allahabad High Court and more cases are likely to be registered. The agency has so far arrested eight persons in connection with the NRHM scam.

The Allahabad High Court had on December 15 last year directed the CBI to conduct preliminary enquiry into the scam and asked the agency to complete the inquiry in four months.
