The members of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) unanimously backed the high-powered committee's (HPC) drive against bogus members.

The members present in the extraordinary general meeting at Tagore Hall on Friday said no election of executive committee and office bearers of the chamber should take place until the registration of bogus members are cancelled.

Moreover, the term of Karsanbhai Patel led HPC has been extended for two years. The HPC had begun the 'cleaning' process of cancelling bogus members.

"The members have unanimously suggested that election should not be carried out till bogus memberships have been cancelled," said Jahangir Cama, member of HPC.

Of the total 3141 members of GCCI, membership of around 1022 members are under scrutiny, while 344 memberships have been put in abeyance due to lack of address proof.

Cama also said that all the proposed amendments suggested by the HPC have been passed unanimously by the members.

However, some modifications have been made in certain proposed amendments.

The committee has curtailed number of members in executive committee to 85. Of this, 46 will be elected, four will be office bearers, 20 co-opted and 15 will be invitees. Earlier, the HPC had proposed only 15 co-opted members and 10 invitees.

Moreover, the HPC had allotted only 18 seats for firms and individual category, which has been increased to 24. Of this 16 will be from the city and eight from muffosil.  Besides, there will be no member of HPC in the executive committee.

"The co-opted members can change the course of working of the committee and we wanted it to be manageable," said Cama.

The executive committee's term will be of two years and half of the elected members will retire every year. The term of the HPC was to expire in October 2010, which has now been extended for two years. "The members wanted the HPC to provide guidance, so the term has been extended," said Cama.

He also said that the steering committee of the chamber will be expanded to harmonise routine process. He said there will also be reshuffling of chairmen of various sub-committees.

The members also suggested that GCCI should be registered under society or trust. "We have discussed the issue of registration of the chambers, but the chamber will decide what type of registration it will be," he said.

The arbitration committee appointed by HPC will give its decision within 90 days.
