With Amdavadis gearing up for summer vacations, anti-social elements are tightening up their game to take advantage of holiday mood in the city. Housebreaks have become rampant in western parts of Ahmedabad with at least one burglary reported every day.

Police have upped the ante with heightened security and night patrolling but haven't been successful in curtailing thefts.

According to police commissioner office, 142 houses were broken into from beginning of this year including 35 in January, 46 in February, 25 in March and 23 in April. Cops, however, maintain that number of housebreaks this year is lowest in last seven years.

As per JCP (sector 1) Ajay Tomar, there is 20% decrease in housebreaks reported from zone 1 area of the city. "Enhanced policing and night patrolling is reason for this decrease (in housebreaks)," said Tomar.  But thieves have been able to con their way into homes conducting six housebreaks every five days. They target homes between February and June, when most people are on vacation or busy with weddings.

DCP (zone 1) V Chandrashekhar informed that these gangs come majorly from Rajasthan and Delhi areas and leave the city after conducting the act. "We have increased the night patrolling and police presence on city roads," said Chandrashekhar.

He further said that citizens in western Ahmedabad have become more concerned about their security as many societies are now equipped with gadgets like CCTV cameras and alarms to ward off thieves.
