The SVPI airport in Ahmedabad has come up with a slew of measures to up its security and improve its functioning. This includes setting up a new ATC tower, acquiring a dog squad, purchase of two new radars for the airport.

The new ATC tower will be constructed between the domestic terminal building and the existing ATC tower. The 12-storeyed structure will be 45 metres high and is estimated to cost Rs40 crore. Airport officials said that the new tower with state-of-the art facilities will assist in improved navigation of aircraft.

The radars for SVPI will be acquired by the Airports Authority of India for a cost of Rs15 crore and are likely to be installed by December 2012. The dog squad is part of an action plan chalked out by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Dog squads are employed for bomb detection and disposal duties. The squad will have 3 retrievers all of which have been trained at the Indo Tibetan Border Police Dog Training Centre.
