The Narmada dam is considered one of the crucial issues associated with the sentiments of the people of Gujarat. However, both the ruling and opposition parties were not able to make the most of the time given to discuss the dam and related matters effectively in the assembly on Friday.

Neither party raised any issue of great concern or highlighted the details of work done in the project. While a dozen MLAs from both the sides participated in the discussion, effective representation of logical issues was absent.

Raghavji Patel, former state water supply minister in RJP and presently Congress MLA, initiated the discussion on departmental budgetary allocations. “While all the state governments and chief ministers have worked to realise the Sardar Sarovar Dam, this government for the last 10 years has been acting as if the project is on track due to it.”

He presented the figures of incomplete work of branch canals, sub-canals and tributaries. He also said that Kutch and Saurashtra region have not received their fair share of water as per plan.

Apart from Narmada, the departments of water supply, water resources, urban development and urban housing and Kalpasar were also discussed. While BJP MLA from Ellisbridge Rakesh Shah praised the state government for ending use of water tankers, Gyasuddin Shaikh, Congress MLA from Shahpur, criticised the government and pointed out that even today the residents of Ahmedabad are supplied water through tankers.
In his response to the discussion, state urban development, water supply and water resources minister Nitin Patel couldn’t elaborate on the development or achievements of the state government in various departments.
