Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today refuted reports in a section of the media that he supported FDI in retail and said his stand on the issue was same as that of BJP which is opposing the move.

"My stand on FDI in retail is the same as that of my party BJP, which is in the interest of the nation," Modi wrote on Twitter.

He said newspaper reports saying that he supports the opening up of the economy in the retail sector were totally incorrect.

"Gujarat government is of the firm view that the recently announced GoI policy on FDI in retail will not only dislocate the small and unorganised retailers but also result in unemployment which is against national interest," Gujarat government spokesperson and Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said in an official release.

However, the state government is also of the view that there are advantages and disadvantages of domestic and foreign firms in retail trade, for which a detailed study is required before taking any decision. It is faulty to believe that Gujarat government is supporting FDI in retail and in this matter, the state government subscribes to the views taken by the central BJP leadership, Vyas said.

"Moreover, foreign trade investment in retail sector is not allowed and cannot be allowed in the name of cash and carry," Vyas said.

He said that in the context of the likelihood of rise in unemployment due to slide down of retail traders, the state government has suggested to conduct systematic survey or study to assess the extent of dislocation of small retail traders due to big retailers.

Big retailers who indulge in predatory pricing should be banned or removed from the markets, Vyas said.
